Cold Day at the Farm

Last week we spent a day volunteering at a farm that supplies fresh food to the local food bank.  While we had happy visions of spring planting, the cold, windy and wet conditions meant that we mostly picked rocks out of the fields.  Despite only lasting a short time with the baby, the kids got their first taste of volunteering, and there were several conversations around what we were doing, and why we were there - definitely worth the cold weather, and the early morning drive.

I personally loved the chance to see a working vegetable farm, with freshly plowed dirt, a greenhouse full of starters, and the camaraderie of working for a good cause.  Now it is time to get some planting done on our own few acres: there are blueberry, elderberry, and blackberry bushes waiting in the garage!

  1. What a fabulous idea! I have been trying to come up with ways to volunteer with Reece and had not thought of this. Will be looking for something similiar.

    1. We'll definitely try it again. It was nice to volunteer somewhere that the kids could be kids. The farm was a perfect place!
