This past weekend it was time to dye our eggs. Since our eggs for our chickens are already lovely shades of brown, blue and green, (see the above photo) we actually had to buy white eggs to dye. Maybe when we increase our flock we'll need to take this into account.
We made three dye baths for the different eggs: yellowish/gold (onion skins) pink (beets) and purple/blue (blueberries). This was the first year we used the natural dyes, and I think next year I'll increase the amount of stuff in the dye to make the colors deeper. To make the dye we simply boiled water, a splash of vinegar, and some of the dye stuff (ie cut up beets) for about 15 minutes. Some of the eggs we colored on with crayons, some we wrapped in rubber bands, and some we wrapped with leaves in stockings to get the imprint of the leaf (these were my favorite).
Colored eggs, what a perfect sign of spring!
